Description
The northern sky is fascinating at night. Depending on the latitude you are at, sometimes on many nights when you go out and look up towards the sky, you can see the green glow on the sky. There are various folk tales surrounding this majestic phenomenon.
The aurora borealis, also called Northern lights in the Northern hemisphere and aurora australis in the Southern hemisphere, occurs thanks to the solar wind. The Earth's magnetic field directs particles coming from the Sun towards the magnetic North and South poles. The particles give off some of their high energy to molecules in the upper atmosphere, which gets re-emitted in the form of light. In addition to the typical green, there is also red and blue, though they are much rarer.
